Background of the Study

School nurses play a vital role in promoting health education and ensuring the well-being of students. As healthcare providers within school environments, they contribute to disease prevention, early health issue detection, and the implementation of health promotion programs (WHO, 2024). In addition to providing direct medical care, school nurses educate students on various health-related topics, including hygiene, nutrition, reproductive health, and disease prevention.

In Borno State, where access to healthcare facilities is often limited, school nurses serve as an essential link between students and primary healthcare services. However, the extent of their impact on health education and student well-being remains largely unexplored. This study assesses the role of school nurses in promoting health education and fostering healthy behaviors among students in Borno State.

Statement of the Problem

Many schools in Borno State lack adequately trained school nurses, resulting in poor health education coverage. In some cases, school nurses are overburdened with clinical responsibilities, leaving little time for preventive health education (Adepoju & Salami, 2024). Additionally, there is limited research on how effectively school nurses deliver health education and influence students’ health behaviors.

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of school nurses in promoting health education and identify challenges hindering their roles in Borno State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the role of school nurses in delivering health education in Borno State.
  2. To assess the impact of school nurses on students’ health awareness and practices.
  3. To identify challenges faced by school nurses in providing health education.

Research Questions

  1. What roles do school nurses play in promoting health education in Borno State?
  2. How do school nurses influence students’ health awareness and practices?
  3. What challenges hinder school nurses from effectively delivering health education?

Research Hypotheses

  1. School nurses have no significant impact on students’ health education.
  2. There is no significant relationship between school nurse interventions and students’ health behaviors.
  3. Challenges faced by school nurses do not significantly affect their effectiveness in delivering health education.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on secondary schools in Borno State, assessing the contributions of school nurses to health education. Limitations include variations in school nurse availability, differences in school health policies, and resource constraints.
